What is 12 iron and what is the difference in the numbers of iron? Thank you! I have been working on making leather moccasins and leather mukluks for my young adult children and have been having a hard time finding a sole for them.

One iron is equal to 1/48 inch, so a sole 3 Irons thick would be 3/48″ or 1/16″, which would be .0625″. This unit is believed to have originated when a piece of iron of a known thickness was used as a guage for the thickness of leather, but this measurement also applies to modern day soling as well. 6 Irons thick would be around 1/8″ thick and 12 iron thick would be around 1/4″ thick. Hope that helps!
